Summary
The Vampire Diarieshad some of the best , and most controversial , eccentric on television , but some of the more minor characters were waste on their limited screen time . The serial was known for its epic Latinian language and the cruel villainswho were constantly trying to keep the heroes aside . Whether the recurring characters were on the side of good or immorality , they still add to the stake of the show and had the potential to do so much more .
Running for eight season from 2009 to 2017,the supernatural adolescent drama had enough succus to produce two spin - offs , The pilot , andLegacies , and stay relevant in the cultural conversation . The key love triangle of the show is between Elena ( Nina Dobrev ) , and the Salvatore Brother , Stefan ( Paul Wesley ) and Damon ( Ian Somerhalder ) . However , outside that conflict , there was a tangled web of characters who all contributed something alone to the show and propelled the plot of ground forward , even if their appearances were light .

10Lexi Branson
Played by Arielle Kebbel
Though she was a fan - favorite character and a bully supporter to Stefan , The lamia Diarieskilled off Lexi Branson . Though she did come back concisely , via a spell , to help Stefan through a time of turmoil , she was never one of the major players in the serial publication . Despite her great chemistry with the rest of the cast , the series did n’t have architectural plan for her besides being a windowpane into Stefan ’s backstory in season 1.Unfortunately , the compelling Lexi was little more than a plot gadget for the show to pull out when necessary .
9Vicki Donovan

Vicki did n’t last long on the show , but she made an encroachment . As one of the main characters Matt ’s ( Zach Roerig ) small babe , her death was one of the first major losses on the show . She was also romantically involved with Elena ’s little pal Jeremy ( Steven R. McQueen ) , and the tragical end to their romance was a motivating broker for many of his later decisions . Though she had a strong personality and was n’t well fight around , Vicki never got the part development she deserved . The purpose of her character only ever mattered in relation to the gentleman in her life .
8Rose-Marie
Played by Lauren Cohan
There were many women in Damon ’s life story that blench in comparison to his feelings for Elena , but Rose - Marie was an unexpectedly significant person in his lifespan . She first appear in season 2 when the residents of Mystic Falls are first beginning to sweep up with Klaus ( Joseph Morgan ) and the original vampire . Also on the run from the archetype , Rose - Marie is a useful ally and could ’ve been an excellent foil to Klaus , had she lived long enough to contact him on the show .
She and Damon have an prompt connection , and his loyalty to her and desire to ease her suffering as she passes is an important moment of humanity for Damon . It ’s substantiation that he has a soul and is able of caring about others . Had Rose - Marie stayed on the show , they could ’ve had a compelling human relationship that was one of equals instead of the frequently toxic pairing of Elena and Damon .
7Kol Mikaelson
Played by Nathaniel Buzolic
One of the original vampires , later joining the cast ofThe master copy , Kol is n’t a major villain inThe Vampire Diariesand serves as more of an annoyance than anything else . He ’s the bratty younger brother of Klaus , Elijah ( Daniel Gillies ) , and Rebekah ( Claire Holt),and does n’t have any clear need besides bask himself and causing as much destruction as possible . It ’s a pity that the original family is n’t as fleshed out inThe Vampire Diariesas they could have been and that Kol ’s character was one of the casualties .
6Mason Lockwood
Played by Taylor Kinney
Mason Lockwood is the reason that Tyler ( Michael Trevino ) is able to navigate the early stages of becoming a werewolfand is the first folk fellow member who has a positive influence on him . unluckily , he hit an enemy out of Damon which terminate in his dying . Mason was an interesting character because he was n’t quite a baddie , but his motivations were dubious , and his pursuit did n’t always aline with what was good for Elena . If he had n’t been killed , he might have been a solid friend for Tyler and an challenging love interest group to someone on the show .
5Liz Forbes
Played by Marguerite MacIntyre
Liz Forbes was the Sheriff of Mystic Falls , Caroline ’s ( Candice King ) female parent , and not a small character on the show , but because of how marvelous she was , there would never be enough screen time for her . Though she ’s staunchly anti - vampire at first , she soon comes to be one of Damon ’s best friends and Caroline ’s biggest support arrangement . Her tragic death in season 6 was a turning point for Caroline ’s fiber and mark the release of one of the strong human characters on the show .
The parent were never the most important part ofThe Vampire Diaries , but Liz ’s status as sheriff helped her move up above this . However , she was still underutilized during her tenure on the series . Liz was a well - originate character who deserved more than come out up now and againto solve a problem or investigate a execution . Seeing her have her own unique plot line would have been a unspoilt use of her character .
4Emily Bennett
Played by Bianca Lawson
Bonnie ’s ( Kat Graham ) ancestor Emily played a important part in time of year 1 of the show but disappeared not long after that . She was premise as a potent witch and an ally to Katherine ( Nina Dobrev ) . However , she before long revealed that she had her own motivation for aid Katherine that had to do with the Bennett blood line . The Bennett blood line is a crucial plot point throughout the serial publication , and Emily being Bonnie ’s gateway to that world , and to magic , was a smart pick .

Mystic Falls trust on Bonnie Bennett to get them out of every situation in The Vampire Diaries . Unfortunately for her , that equals a lot of trauma .
3Sage
Played by Cassidy Freeman
Another pregnant woman in Damon ’s life isSage , an ancient lamia who steers Damon onto a more sympathetic path , but ultimately conform to her final stage because of her ties to the original family . Damon and Sage have a compelling human relationship because she unfeignedly care for him , but not in a romantic path . Though they share a candy kiss , her heart lies with Finn ( Casper Zafer ) , an original , whose death causes her to die because he sired her . She was very charismatic and might have been a forceful hydrofoil to Elena when she and Damon fell in dearest .
2Isobel Flemming
Played by Mia Kirshner
Elena ’s giving birth mother , Isobel , is n’t a very sympathetic character , as she is willing to give the the great unwashed she loves for the chance to become a vampire , but this ruthlessness makes her all the more compelling . She also has a chronicle with Alaric ( Matthew Davis ) , whom she abandons and convinces she has died . It ’s obvious that with the mess she left in her wake , there was plenty of unfinished business by the time she was killed at Klaus ' paw . Sadly she and Elena never got to explore their human relationship as parent and child .
1Kai Parker
Played by Chris Wood
Kai is the best villain inThe lamia Diariesfor many reasons , including his deep lack of empathy and moral that make him the most vile killer in the serial . However , no series is complete without a really horrible baddie , and Kai is up to the challenge . His casual and funny behaviour is in sharp contrast to his office - thirsty need , and his action go to some of the biggest plot of ground twists in the serial . Of of course , the heroes vote down him in the end , but as such a complex reference , Kai could have been on the show for many seasons .
