Greg Weisman Talks Inspiration for Gargoyles & Comic Process

Screen Rant : How did you first come up withGargoyles? What inspired its creation ?

Greg Weisman : Well , the literal inspiration was actual stone gargoyle . As a teen , I was fascinated with them and collected postcards with them and/or took photos of them . I was concerned in why they were up there on churches and buildings , etc . The caption ( such as it was ) was that they were there to frighten off off evil spirits . And I was intrigue by the notion that you ’d put something scary up on the wall to scare off iniquity . So , later , when developing the show , I tried to extrapolate backwards to issue forth up with an account for that . Other influences array from Disney ’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears to Hill Street Blues to the complete work of William Shakespeare to William Faulkner ’s Yoknapatawpha County to the Legends of King Arthur to multiple mythologies of the world .

What is the biggest difference between making Gargoyles in an repair script format vs in a comic format ?

Greg Weisman : For me , the big remainder is mostly the whole of measure . On television , in particular back then on broadcast television , the unit of measure is an human activity , i.e. the space between commercials , so that each act tells its own mini - story that ’s interesting enough that the witness comes back after the commercial falling out . For a comic book , the unit of measuring stick is a varlet , i.e. the space between turn each page , so that each PAGE say its own miniskirt - write up that ’s interesting enough to keep the reader turn to the next varlet .

What is a body of work day / the even originative process for you when it come to working on Gargoyles ?

Greg Weisman : I start by breaking the story of each electric discharge on index number identity card ( once I knew how many return each arc is croak to be , which is often limit by how many issues each arc is run to be , which is often defined by commercial considerations ) . Next I break the exit I ’m writing down on index cards by varlet . Then I sit at the computer and just start scripting . I spell full - hand , so that the creative person has a good thought of what I ’m endeavor to achieve .

Is there anything about comedian that has changed in late years that has touch your process , liken to when you were creating comic for Gargoyles before ?

Elisa Maza flashes her badge on the cover of Gargoyles #5

Greg Weisman : Not really . It ’s switch since the ' 80s , when I was writing Captain Atom . Back then , I did n’t really think in damage of arcs that would be collected in case-by-case trade paperbacks or whatever . I just keep writing stories , constantly put down pipe for multiple unexampled stories to hail .
