Star Trek: Voyager
Summary
Robert Beltran , who act Commander Chakotay onStar Trek : Voyager , say that the struggle between Captain Kathryn Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ) and Seven of Nine ( Jeri Ryan ) went"way too far , for way too long" . After Ryan join thecast ofStar Trek : Voyager , the show focused to a great extent on Seven of Nine , with Janeway ’s firm direction playing a major office in Seven ’s journey back to humanity . Seven ’s frigid Borg efficiency repeatedly clash with Janeway ’s scientific curiosityand Starfleet ’s respect for living , in on-going moral battles that reinvigoratedVoyagerafter three seasons of flagging viewership . Chakotay , meanwhile , yen without much character maturation , starring inVoyagerepisodes that often missed the soft touch .
The conflict between Seven of Nine and Captain Janeway , and the rich character development that followed , were well - received by most viewer , butStar Trek : Voyager ’s own Robert Beltran did n’t see it that way of life . Beltran expands on his thoughts inThe Fifty - Year Mission : The Next 25 Yearsby Mark A. Altman and Robert Gross , explaining his frustration with the direction thatStar Trek : Voyagertook by focalise onSeven of Nine and Janeway . Read Beltran ’s citation below :
I know that other people were not happy , but I ’ll let them utter for themselves . To me , it was this dateless scene that was compose instalment after instalment of these all - knowing , all - seeing , all-powerful reference that were battling each other , going through the same argument over and over between Janeway and Seven of Nine . I have to say that that made Janeway weaker by making her this all - seeing , all - knowing , never - made - a - mistake - in - my - biography form of role . There ’s no struggle in that . You really have to search hard to encounter conflict with those kinds of characters . The Doctor became sort of the same matter . I think they wrote very well for non - humanity . People have misconstrued my criticism as that I felt like I should get more airtime . No , no , trust me . By the time that seven years was over , I was counting the day that I did n’t have to work . It was not that at all . In fact , I had conversations with writers tell them , “ Look , if you just give me one scene in every installment that ’s a in force scene , I will be very well-chosen . ”So I conceive that this thing between Janeway and Seven of Nine just got get way too far , for way too long . “Let ’s make Seven of Nine more human again , ” and she would make progress and then the next week she ’d be back to the same old half Borg / half human . I know that it ’s hard for any television series to exert a quality over seven years . I experience that the writers have a huge challenge in assay to do that , and I sympathise with them . But that ’s what they ’re paid for . I think that they have the easy way out in many representative .

Star Trek : Voyager resoundingly failed Chakotay as a character , but despite his story issues , Prodigy has a luck to ferment Chakotay around .
Robert Beltran Doesn’t Get Seven and Janeway
Seven of Nine and Captain Janeway were far from perfect, and full of conflict.
Star Trek : Voyagermade it very open thatJaneway and Seven were not always right , so Robert Beltran ’s title that Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine were present as infallible , almighty characters exhibit a surprising lack of media literacy . Janeway and Seven of Nine ’s unspoiled episodesdepicted the couplet ’s tremendous amount of conflict , difficult decisions with no clear correct answer , and ultimate savvy of one another . Seven ’s journey to humanity , instead of being systematically reset , initiated pregnant character growth for Janeway and the Doctor ( Robert Picardo ) . These were interesting account that audiences responded well to , so it made sense thatVoyagerfocused on them .
By comparing , Chakotay just did n’t cut it as a lead character . Beltran ’s teetotal public presentation and Chakotay ’s want of conflict with others meant Chakotay’s"good scenes"were suffer others , as a sounding board for Captain Janeway or confidante for Lt . B’Elanna Torres ( Roxann Dawson ) . Worse , Voyager ’s fraudulent cultural consultant pushed authentic exploration of Chakotay ’s Indigenous inheritance out of the moving picture . The component just were n’t there to make Chakotay that compelling or dynamic , but that does n’t excuse Beltran ’s fundamental mistaking of Janeway and Seven ’s characters and wilful ignorance of whatStar Trek : Voyagerwas actually doing with Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine .
Star Trek : Voyageris cyclosis on Paramount+ .
