The actor that was originally considered to portray the eponymic fusion of Lt . Tuvok ( Tim Russ ) and Neelix ( Ethan Phillips ) inStar Trek : Voyagerseason 2 , instalment 24 , " Tuvix",“wouldn’t have worked,“according to Phillips and Russ . Tuvix , as the transporter amalgamation names himself , is played masterfully by Tom Wrightin one ofVoyager ’s most controversial episodes , in whichCaptain Kathryn Janeway(Kate Mulgrew ) must decide whether to divide Tuvix into his component parts of security officer Tuvok and affable chef Neelix , or permit Tuvix to proceed his accidental beingness .
Tom Wright ’s ability to channel both Ethan Phillips and Tim Russ in adequate measure as Tuvix plays a major ingredient in why theStar Trek : Voyagerepisode is so memorable , butTom Wright was not the first doer ab initio considered for the role of Tuvix . Lisa Klink : I think we were at one point .
Ethan Phillips : They talk over that with me , and I was willing to . Nothing apparently ever came of it , but yeah .
Robert Duncan McNeill : No umbrage , because I think you would ’ve been phenomenal , but it was so much well to have a third person , to have that filter that Tom gave it .

Ethan Phillips : It would have been whole different . It would n’t have worked .
Tim Russ : It would not have made any sense . It make much more sentiency to have someone neutral to encounter that role .
Tim Russ point out that , unlike Ethan Phillips , he was not approach for the role of Tuvix , which also would have been a very different show .

A Third Actor To Play Star Trek: Voyager’s Tuvix Was The “Wright” Call
A new actor makes Tuvix being a new entity more believable.
One of the primary conceit of " Tuvix " as an episode is that Tuvix , the character , is neitherTuvok nor Neelix , but a brand - Modern entity comprised of both original fictitious character . It ’s far easier to pull that off if Tuvix is played by a new actor , and not Ethan Phillips or Tim Russ in unlike makeup . With Tom Wright in the role , the loss of both Tuvok and Neelix is feel more acutely , with a mother wit that these familiar character are actually gone . It ’s also far more devastating to turn a loss Tuvix as a trenchant fictional character who can never be seen again , especially after Wright ’s moving public presentation of Tuvix pleading for his aliveness .
If Ethan Phillips had take on Tuvix , the episode would have read as a transporter accident that cause Tuvok to be take in by Neelix , rather than a malfunction that created a whole new character . The conclusion to repair Neelix to his normal state sans Tuvok ’s influence would have been a much easier one for Janeway to make , rather than the challenging moral dilemma that asksJaneway to stop Tuvix ’s lifeto bring back Tuvok and Neelix . regorge Tom Wright as Tuvix was absolutely the correct call , and conveys that " Tuvix " isStar Trek : Voyager ’s edition of the Kobayashi Maru , a test localise Janeway in a no - win situation .
