Based on the novel by Laurence Yep , The Tiger ’s Apprentice is a 2024 animation action - escapade motion-picture show . When Tom Lee discovers that his family has been shielder of a deep Phoenix Egg for centuries , he must learn from a novel wise man name Mr. Hu , a tiger , to live on up to his phratry ’s bequest and save the world from a novel threat .
The Tiger’s Apprentice’s Characters Are One-Dimensional
It ’s hard to become amply endue in any of the characters because they ’re so hollowly written . There are the occasional bit that have depth and emotion , but they ’re so few and far between that , when they came , I found myself wondering why there was an overall lack of evolution to start out with . It would have certainly made us feel more when Henry Golding ’s Tiger ( who can transform into a man ) and Tom finally have a scene to state those feelings . It wipe off any emotionThe Tiger ’s Apprenticemay have had , ordinarily exchange it with empty dialogue and sorcerous action scene .
There ’s a want of warmheartedness and heart to the eccentric dynamic , and its overarching story is sometimes doing too much without retard down to give care to its worldbuilding and growing .
Tom ( Brandon Soo Hoo ) and his gran ’s ( Tan Kheng Hua ) relationship is barely established before he ’s sent on a soaring risky venture to protect the phoenix nut — which is pass on to him by his grandma — from fall into the hands of the evil Loo , a one - notation scoundrel who has some sparkle thanks toMichelle Yeoh ’s commit representative performance . But her vicious plans fall flat , too , which is a ignominy considering her entire character arc is what ’s take for up Tom ’s character development as an untrained protector suddenly thrust into a sorcerous world he does n’t whole understand .

As watcher , we ’re Tom , thrown into the film ’s narrative with small to keep us stock-still to what ’s going on . We ’re just take up on a unwarranted ride filled with empty adventure , living zodiacs , and a scoundrel who wants to recreate the world with no humans in it — the reasons behind the latter are muddled . Perhaps the character who makes the least sense is Leah Lewis ’ Rav , Tom ’s schoolmate . A twist need her connection is revealed about halfway through the film , but it never amounts to anything meaty , and Rav ’s decision is shoe - horn in to make conflict that is flimsily handled .
Paramount+ ’s movie and television libraries are thrive in October 2024 , and there are a number of new original docudrama , series , and films to see .
The Animated Story Is Lacking Despite An Interesting Set-Up
The Tiger ’s Apprenticecan only be describe as basic . Pockets of charm pour down up here and there , but it ’s never enough to sustain it . The story itself has a lot of potential difference — a kid is thrown into a fantastical macrocosm his family line ’s been a part of for generation after believing himself mediocre for so long is challenging on the surface , and there ’s a lot that could have been mined from the premise alone . But the film does n’t take its clock time to establish Tom ’s feelings before he ’s on his way to becoming guardian , something that does n’t feel earned by the closing .
The story is just so rush , there ’s scarce any meter spent on establish the domain we ’re usher in to before it ’s full - stop number ahead . Considering the film is scarce an hour and 23 minutes longsighted ( and it ends much before than that ) , there could have been more fourth dimension spend flesh out the story enough so that at least the big character moments and sophisticate land . It ’s severely lacking on that front , butThe Tiger ’s Apprenticehas enough to harbor the younger kiddos with its occasional humor , shiny animation elan , and its transforming zodiac grapheme , even if it ’ll hardly engage with older audiences .
